Syzygium Astrale “Winter Lights”

Winter Lights is a fast-growing hardy Australian native Lilly Pilly shrub with lovely red, orange and bronze new growth.

Syzygium always makes a great screen and Winter Lights is particularly showy because it has those expensive-looking red highlights in Spring.

Summer brings out its small white fluffy flowers which are followed by edible purple fruit. The birds will thank you when this arrives at your door, but the bugs won’t because Winter Lights is psyllid resistant.

Most folk use this as a frost-hardy hedge or as a large container plant where it needs little attention once established, but if you like topiary Winter Lights responds well to clipping and pruning.

Quick Facts: 

• What to use me for: My traditional job is formal screening, but why not mix it up and put me in a container or use me as a specimen topiary exhibit.  

• I grow to A large 2-4 metres high by 2 metres wide

• Where to place me:  Full sun and part shade suit me. I can tolerate light frost and drought once established.

• How far to space me: For a tight-knit hedge space me 1-1.5 metres from my pals.

• Soil Conditions:  Any fertile soil is good for me. I’ll need watering well for the first 12 weeks and appreciate nice thick mulch over my roots.
